Robert Hurst is one of the top sports artists in the country. Painting with acrylics, he is able to create a feeling of dynamic movement using gestural sweeps of vibrant color to capture the charismatic essence of the people he commits to canvas.
His art education began while studying medical illustration at both Stephen F. Austin University and North Harris County College in Texas (1978-1982). In 1983, he studied painting at The Art Institute of Houston.
Widely sought after by both corporations and private individuals, Hurst's work is included in the notable collections of Muhammad Ali, Earl Campbell, Reggie Jackson, Michael Johnson, Jim Palmer, the Babe Ruth Museum in Baltimore, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, The Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo and Tri-Star Productions, among others.
Since 1997, Hurst has been the official artist to the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, capturing images of the museum’s inductees on canvas and in limited edition prints with brilliant hues and thoughtful brush strokes. For the past five years, the Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo has commissioned Hurst to create artwork that actively reflects its spirit. The art is used extensively in The Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo’s annual media campaign. The New Orleans Saints football organization chose Hurst’s image to build excitement for, and publicize, their 1999-2000 season. And the Baltimore Orioles honored Hurst when they commissioned him to create a large work of art that now hangs in the reception area of Camden Yards Ballpark.
Hurst’s work has been published extensively in numerous publications, including but not limited to Art Trends, Sports Collectors Digest, the cover of New Texas Magazine, and various Beckett sports publications.
